.hair bow, hair bow on the wall.

being a girl, wait, being me comes with a great deal of accessorizing. as i reflect back over my fashion stages, i can't ever think of one, even at my punkiest, where i didn't clad myself in accessories. nothing has changed. a scarf, a necklace, earrings big and small...i love it all.

now that i'm having a daughter, i am drawn to mini-accessories. her hair accessories collection is already bursting. i must resist to keep it from overflowing. i try.

to store her hair accessories, i decided to use an adorable method a friend of mine found on pinterest. basically, you find a frame of your liking and adhere ribbon to it to clip your bows and such. the frame i liked was oval and had a vintage feel.

instead of using colorful ribbon, i opted for a cream lace to allow the accessories to be the stars of the show. let me show you how i put it together.

flip the frame over, begin measuring the strips of ribbon to cut by simply lining it up against the frame you have and cutting them accordingly. this also helps with eyeballing the spacing between rows you desire.

i am sure there may be other more sophisticated methods of adhering the ribbon to the frame, but i love to use my hot glue gun any chance i get. so, if you also have a trigger finger for hot glue, feel free to do the same. i just squeezed out a dabble and then carefully pressed the ribbon to one side and then did the same thing pulling it tautly on the other.

the most challenging part is keeping the rows from being slanted. i had to pull mine up a couple of times to keep the rows level. once you have all of the strips glued on, voila- you're done!

the fun part is adding the accessories. pastels and whites, clips and bands, my what a pretty site this will be hanging on my babycakes' nursery wall.

.lift off.

when we were ready to reveal our baby's gender, it was on the very day we found out ourselves. i had already acquired two really big balloons; one in blue and one in pink. my idea was to use them in the reveal, but had no idea how. my eye guy and i went through a variety of ideas. mine were simple and his involved burning strings and exploding balloons and the like.

we settled on simply releasing the color of the gender we were not having and holding tight to the one we were. to capture and share the moment, we had the process recorded and photographed to later show our friends and family.

here's a little still life of the moment...

our hearts are filled with joy and our lives are now filled with sugar and spice and everything nice.

.all dressered up.

now that we know our babycakes is a little girl, we are starting on her nursery, her own little corner of our home. we want it to reflect love, happiness, and tranquility. my eye guy and i decided to use white furniture because of the purity and innocence it portrays.

like with most things, i love to have a hand in things that are special to us. from our personalized wedding, to unique parties, to the decor in our home, that personal touch just makes me smile. although he offered to build her crib, i politely turned my husband down on that one and figured we would leave that to the experts.

however, we decided that her dresser would be a piece that we could save some money on and use a little of our DIYness.

we started our search at discount stores and didn't have much luck there. so, we turned to craig's list and there were quite a few dressers to choose from. we ended up getting a fair deal on a cherry-wood colored one with more sophisticated silver knobs that was in brand new condition. we were both new to using craig's list and i'll admit that it felt a little strange to go to someone's home. after all the criminal shows i watch, i probably was more cautious than most normal people. but hey- we survived!

.this is the exact dresser before we got our hands on it.

my eye guy had the hard labor end of things. first of all, i'm not doing any heavy lifting so he was in charge of all the moving about of the dresser. then, he took on the task of sanding it down completely, removing the adult-looking original knobs and then painting the entire thing white.

i had my eye on some gorgeous hardware for the knobs at anthropologie, but we picked a dresser with a dozen knobs. that added up quickly with anthropologie's prices and i decided to search elsewhere. after going to all the local hardware stores, i finally found a glass knob that i thought had the right touches of daintiness and shine. after bringing them home, they were quickly installed and voila- we have babycakes' finished dresser! it is her first piece of furniture for her lifetime and it is finished with her daddy's and my love.

now, just to fill it up with all those ruffles and patterns...

.expectant.

oh shortcake. oh shoes. oh how i've neglected you these past few months. i have a confession to make. (is it still a confession when most of your world already knows?) my life has been flip flopped upside down into something i've dreamed about since i was a little girl and now am fully grasping as a woman. i am pregnant.

yes, i am holding within my body the presence of another, MY child. my future is now intertwined with not just my husband and our sure to be long line of dogs, but there is now another, our babycakes.

we found out the shocking, yet not so much because we were a wishin' and a hopin', our news at the early, early, early stage of only three weeks! if you know me well at all, you know i am impatient and love to share every joyful thing in my life. so, to keep a secret, from basically its inception, was an act in extreme will power for me. it was much easier for my somewhat quiet eye guy. not our mothers, not our best of friends, not our postal workers knew the best kept secret of my life. ok, i told our dogs because i just couldn't resist.

at eight weeks, we finally had our first doctor's appointment and got to both hear and SEE our baby's heartbeat on an ultrasound. as my eye guy and i held hands, our three hearts beat as one in that moment and our family tree bloomed.

i am now in the beginning of my second trimester and let me just tell you two things. thing one: it was more than a bowl full of cherries worth of joy to finally share our great news with the whole wide world. thing two: being pregnant, for me, has been nauseating, exhausting and preventative in the way of food blogging. my kitchen and i have been enemies for months and just this week we finally reacquainted ourselves with each other without mentioning such tense topics such as garlic, pepper, or rich dairy.

by many mothers before me, i am promised a second trimester with renewed energy and gusto. right now, i'd settle for a little spark of any sort. while i'm madly in love with my growing babycakes, i'm ready to get back to the gym and to the world of cooking and baking. let the belly grow and the thighs stay put! let the sight of a grocery store bring menu ideas and not gags! let this child growing within me know each day of the life ahead that i love, love, love him or her with all my pea pickin' heart.

.wishing.

today, i want to share an amazing quote with you. sometimes, there is so much power in one little sentence and for me, this sentence embodies this.

"You gotta stop wearing your wishbone where your backbone outta be."
- Elizabeth Gilbert

how many times have you wished for something in your life, but not had the courage to make it come to fruition? though i may not know the exact number myself, my hand is raised for having had it happen to me. but on those moments, those brave occasions when we walk on the tightrope of joy and defeat, when we cross over from wishing to happening, we feel alive.

even when we might topple over on the way to our dreams, the mere notion that we tried makes us feel alive. be courageous enough to live your life and follow your dreams. wishing and hoping are beautiful notions, but making those wishes your reality is truly the bees knees.

.snickerdoodle cookie bottom cupcakes.

seriously. am i allowed to start this post with seriously? sure i can, it is my blog after all. but folks, this is seriously going to be your new favorite cupcake.

here's the deal, it takes the magic of a snickerdoodle cookie and bippity boppity boos it to a cupcake. they magically combine so much so that the bottom of this cupcake is in fact a snickerdoodle cookie. seriously.

i wish i had invented this genius recipe because i'd take it on the road and sell it in on corners, shouting to the onlookers, COME ONE, COME ALL, GET YOUR COOKIE, GET YOUR CUPCAKE, GET YOUR COOKIECUPCAKE,SERIOUSLY!!

you'll make these. you'll love these. you'll make them again and again. first, there's cookie dough on the bottom, then cupcake batter piled on top.

when these babies come out of the oven, top them with cinnamon cream cheese frosting.

bite into the layers of cookie and cupcake and you'll feel as if you've died and gone to snickerdoodle heaven. seriously.

.happy heart (for everyone) day.

for those of you madly in love or even angrily liking someone, valentine's day is a glorious time for you to basque in romance. on the other hand, if you'd like to shove cupid's arrow where the sun don't shine, then this is a terrible, miserable, corporate-created day for you. hey, i've been on both sides of the valentine's fence; so, i get it.

although i'm hopelessly in love with my newish husband and have little hearts floating in my eyes, this won't be that kind of post. what i'd like to chat about instead is all the love we can all find on a day like this; with or without the smooching.

on v-day especially, life can be depressing for some of us. let me try (notice i said try) to give you some ideas to cheer you up. make a list of ten things you love that don't include romantic love. i'll go first.

1. the way my puppy dogs both want to snuggle as close as they can against me when they're napping
2. any happy feedback i get from my baking or blogging
3. the way my hpff still lets me laugh at all my own dorky jokes after all these years
4. real mail written by a real person; especially if there's a p.s.
5. watching netflix tv shows like the office and parks and recreation unabashedly one right after the other
6. cheese
7. my new camera and the fun i'm having with it
8. alarm-clockless weekends
9. a clean house
10. board game nights

now, if you don't smile at some point when making your own list, then let's move to plan b. write 5 things that have touched your heart in a joyous way over the past year. i'm not going to lead by example on this one in fear of leaving something more breathtaking out than the item before. but rest assured, i have 5, more than 5 even, and some of them are from my crappiest days. i'll wait for you to make yours...

ok, if you're still feeling like the 'scrooge of valentine's current,' let's try one more tactic. pick that one person, that one child, that one pet or that one imaginary friend still in your life that makes your heart (not romantically) skip a beat and close your eyes. wait, read this first and then close your eyes. phew. that was a close one.

think of that one person or pet you've picked out and travel back to one of your favorite memories with them and how happy it made your heart. ok, now go ahead and close your eyes and try it. open your eyes. please tell me there was at least a little smile even on the inside.

well folks, i've done my darndest to ensure that we all have a pleasant valentine's day. a day about love is a day for all of us to rejoice in because love comes in so many forms.

p.s. the best kind of love you can possibly imagine is the kind you give away.
